Day 347: Nothin But Net

Normally, winter is our sabbath from youth sports. Fall baseball is over before Halloween, spring baseball starts in March which rolls right into summer flag football or baseball camp or whatever, so winter is the only time of year that have this nice little pocket of no sports. Not that we don't love our sports, but it's nice to have our Saturdays back and not have to rush out the door after school most week nights to various practices and games.

Until Calen announced he wanted to play basketball really bad. And guess what? Basketball is played in winter.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

Coincidentally, a kid (I say kid, but he's like 25) that is affiliated with the base though Boys and Girls Club of Petaluma decided that he really wanted to start a sort of basketball camp/league hybrid specifically on base for the CG kids. Non-competitive, co-ed with ages varying from 5-14 on each team. The purpose is to teach the kids the skills and rules and have a good time doing it.

Sign us up.

Camden wanted no part of it ("Because I'm too little to reach the basketball hoop" - which isn't a lie) so Calen is doing the basketball camp solo. There's only 3 teams, so each Saturday for the next 5 weeks each team plays a double header.

But hey, it's all played in the base gym which is literally like 300 yards from our house.

Today (after one single practice) was the first double header. Calen shoots a lot of hoops during recess at school, but he has no idea how to play the game. The first game was definitely a "throw you to the wolves" kind of game, but the two refs (one of them the kid that set up the whole thing) are very fair, only calling traveling on the big kids and telling the older kids to back off when the really inexperienced 5 year olds take shots. Unfortunately since it's the base gym, the hoops are set up for adults, and are TALL and not adjustable. But, the kids learned very quickly, and Calen made one basketball his first game. His second game, he made two baskets and a free throw and learned quickly how to play defense.

For me, basketball is one of my least favorite sports, but I will admit that it was fun watching those little guys fly up and down the court.

But still, I'm counting down the days to baseball season.
