Day 103: My Kind of Duty Day

We really have an easy duty station here.

Instead of dealing with months long deployments or overnight duty every 3 to 5 days, Brad works a 7-4 Monday-Friday, and his only duty is the occasional honor guard event. Compared to what we've dealt with, this place is cake.

Today Brad had an honor guard event in the tiny little town village of Point Reyes. It was their "Western Weekend" and the honor guard was the official kickoff of the parade.

Often times, he just goes and does his event (parade, graduation, etc) and comes home. But since it was a parade today during a little town festival, we decided we'd make it a family event and all attend. After all, what's a little free entertainment to spend a Sunday?

The town of Point Reyes Station is adorable. It has a massive population of 840 (thanks Google) and it the "city" takes up and entire ONE street of maybe 3 blocks. And the entire town showed up for the parade, dressed in their "western" wear, down to the boots and the hats. I felt underdressed in my normal tshirt and jeans, and no cowboy wear at all. I took notes for next year.

For being such a small town, the parade was long and fun. Lots of performances and little "shows" in the middle of it, with an MC announcer and music and everything. Good job, tiny town. The kids enjoyed catching candy flying from various floats and watching the hispanic dancing routines as they walked by. Brad met us halfway through the parade to watch the last hour or so with us, and then we went to lunch across the street (at one of the two restaurants in town), and then called it a day.

I love fun random days like this. A new town to explore with a unique event to expose the family to. Plus, who doesn't like walking around with a man in uniform.
