Day 68: I Want Adventure In The Great Wide Somewhere

For Father's Day, you know way back in June, I had given Brad a weekend getaway camping trip (instead of stuff.  Because we are both over stuff). The plan was to go camp on Lake Tahoe in August with the boys and the puppy and have a great time.

Except, I waited too long to make reservations, and every campsite on Tahoe was booked solid. I finally ventured off Lake Tahoe and found openings at Fallen Leaf Lake, which is a smaller (but not tiny) mountain lake only a mile away from Lake Tahoe.

I figured, we'd camp at Fallen Leaf Lake, maybe check out that lake the first day, then hike over to Tahoe the second day to not screw up my initial plans.

Turns out, Tahoe was neither desired or missed.

Fallen Leaf Lake is GORGEOUS. The water is crystal clear (and so clean it is certified "potable"), the backdrop is stunning mountains on all sides, and most of the people with loud/obnoxious/invasive motorized water craft prefer to go across the highway to Tahoe, so it's quiet.

Once we finally got there this evening (a 4 hour drive turned unexpectedly into 7), we wasted no time in checking out Fallen Leaf Lake. It's a moderate walk from our wooded campsite, across a gorgeous meadow, and through more woods to the shore (giving it a real secluded feel). We blew up a little inflatable raft and the boys did their best to navigate the windy evening waters. Rebel even dove in for a quick swim!

Calen on his raft!
After a quick visit to the lake, we walked back to our campsite and set up the tent, which the boys slept in, and set up Brad and my "tent" (i.e. the back of the Yukon), and roasted hot dogs for dinner all while on bear patrol.

The campground is FULL of black bears. Every site comes with a "bear locker", a metal locker with a specialized door on it that bears can't access, in which you MUST store all your food/coolers/etc or else you are 100% guaranteed to be inviting bears to an evening dinner and a dance, no black tie dress required.

It was a short day here, but we can't wait to see what the weekend brings.
