Day 88: Hawaii Day SIX

The sun came out today. Like really, really out. The way I always imagined Hawaiian sunny days.

This is what I've been waiting for.

Maybe it's because it's my Mom's birthday, and she's basically solar powered.

Either way, it was a perfect day for the sun to shine, because we had a long day at the beach planned.

Do you see rain clouds? Me either.

Our daily morning walk on our personal beach.

For the boys' joint birthdays, my mom got them surf lessons here in Kauai. And what better day for them to do surf lessons than on Gramma's birthday?

The surf lessons happened to be on what is now declared as our Favorite Beach (Kiahuna).

Fantastic surf school!

They started on the shore, learning basic movements and techniques by their coach. Brad and I have done surfing lessons before in San Diego, and Brad commented that this coach taught WAY more in 15 minutes than the kid in San Diego for an hour. We were impressed.

Then it was off to the surf with their coach! Where we generally boogie board and snorkel on the right side of the U-shaped beach, the designated surfing area was on the far left. There was good surf for beginner surfers, easy enough for them to paddle back out on their own strength where the coach is waiting, setting them up for a good wave, and letting them go.

Off they go together!

Calen did a great job. He perservered, kept trying, and was absolutely over the moon when he managed to stay up and surf all the way to the beach (where we were waiting).

But Camden? Camden was a natural. He got up on the first try. He rarely fell unless some other surfer was in the way. He. Freaking. Rocked it. He rocked it so much he was throwing up Shaka "Hang Loose" signs as he soared over the waves and slid gracefully onto the sand.

Quite possibly the coolest thing we've done so far.

And since we were already at the beach and it was finally the first nice day of our trip, we decided to stay put, thank you very much. We had packed sandwich makings in our cooler and just played in the sand all. afternoon.

That water was so blue and turquoise today

For dinner, we headed out to Kalapaki Joe's, a sports bar type restaurant not far off from where we were. I was skeptical when walking in, but the fish taco was delicious.

We ate early enough to make it back to the West Shore (Kiahuna is on the South) in time to run out the back door and take a nice sunset walk on our local beach, which was absolutely stunning.

Cam stayed behind with me again tonight after everyone went back inside and we just enjoyed the shore together. We found lots of crab holes and even one palm-sized crab skittering across the sand. Cam snatched it, it put up a fight and we both screamed as he dropped it and it scurried away. Hilarious moment.

So far, this is my favorite day on Kauai!
