Day 30: Frozen Ecosystems

For school lately, we've been trying to finish up a big Ecosystem project that we've been working on for...well...like a year.

Listen, I get distracted, and then I have things to do, and then I have to finish those things. It's hard. Okay?

The project is part of the Boy Scouts - Environmental Science merit badge. One of the things they need to do is visit two different types of ecosystems multiple times a year to observe living and non living parts, differences since the last visit, etc. We chose a high and low elevation ecosystem. The high one being up Old Woman at the high lake - where I hiked yesterday.

And if I had been thinking, I would have brought the boys to do their ecosystem. But I didn't think, so we didn't do it.

The low elevation location is our fishing hole at Buskin River. This is easy to access because it's less than 5 miles away and doesn't require and actual hike to get to.

It was cold and clear today, so off we went to Buskin River, armed with heavy jackets and note pads.

A year ago, when we visited, the river was frozen. You could walk partway out, and there was a layer of snow on top. But this year, this strangely warm winter, the ice is paper thin and only stretches out maybe a foot from shore. There's no snow to be seen, except little frost covered branches of leafless bushes nearby. The ground is frozen, but no snow. It's so bizarre!

We will try to get up Old Woman in the next day or two.
